On Friday, August 20th, graduate students, faculty, alumni, and industry partners gathered together for the 6th Annual Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Graduate Research Symposium. Research presentations were given in 3 sessions: “Electronic Phenomena and Devices”, “Soft Matter & Nanostructures” and “Advanced Characterization”. In total 15 graduate students from 11 different research groups gave talks on their current research. Along with the oral research presentations was an industrial panel with scientists Miki Kunitake -Corning (Cornell MSE Alum 2015) and Steven Baxter - Arkema (Cornell Chemistry Alum 1989), which allowed students to discuss the challenges and benefits of industrial careers. The MSE Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Initiative Team presented an in-depth introduction of the initiative with input form the community. The JEDI team is jointly led by students and faculty, dedicated to continuously improving Materials Science and Engineering through inclusion and equity and building a community in which diversity and intersectionality is recognized, accommodated and celebrated.

Following the formal presentations, the group gathered for a poster session where an additional 16 students presented their work. This more informal setting allowed for exchange of ideas and networking between students and external community members.
This event would not have been possible without our generous sponsors, Sartomer, Arkema, IBM, DOW and Corning. Nor would it have been possible without the organization efforts of Stephan Sutter, Dana V. Chapman, Rachel Miller, Maya Martirossyan, Joe Casamento, Bennett Cromer, R. Paxton Thedford, Duncan Sutherland and Marissa Porter.
