What is the difference between a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) and a Master of Science (M.S.)?

The M.Eng. is a one-year professional degree requiring a capstone project.

  • The M.Eng. program is designed to improve graduates' career prospects in industry, non-profit, and government.

The M.S. is a two-year research degree requiring a thesis.

Should I apply if my undergraduate degree is not in Materials Science and Engineering?

Yes, students with degrees in other technical disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.

How long does the program take?

The program is designed to be completed in two full-time semesters; however, some students actively choose to complete it in three semesters.

Part-time students typically complete the program in four semesters.

What are the application deadlines?

Applications are accepted year-round, except June-July (scheduled maintenance).

Fall Admissions

  • January 15 - Priority Review Deadline

Spring Admissions

  • October 15 - Priority Review Deadline (includes early-admit Cornell seniors)

All applications received before the priority review deadline will receive full consideration. Applications received after will be considered for available openings in the program.

All application materials must be submitted prior to review.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure they have completed the application.

What is the early-admit criteria for current Cornell undergrads?

Cornell undergraduates who will have 1-8 credits remaining in the final semester of their undergraduate program may apply for early admission to the M.Eng. program. After admission, students enroll in both undergraduate and M.Eng. courses in their final undergraduate semester. Upon completion of their undergraduate credits, students become M.Eng. students the following semester, often completing the program in one additional semester.

What is the minimum GPA required for admission?

The College of Engineering has a minimum GPA of 2.7/4.0 for admission.

  • Efforts are made to interpret grades on a comparable basis to Cornell undergraduate grades.
    • The maximum GPA at Cornell is 4.3.
    • Applicants from schools using other grading systems (for example, some schools outside of the United States) can report GPA scores on the Cornell basis, but should also report the original GPA with an official transcript.

How do I submit GRE scores?

Official scores must be reported to Cornell's code number: 2098

  • You will be prompted to add your scores in the online application, but the official scores still must be sent to Cornell.

Final admission decisions will not be released until official GRE scores are received.

What if circumstances change after I accept admission and I will not be registering in the semester I applied for?

If you will not be able to attend, it is important that you contact us as soon as possible: mse-gfa@cornell.edu

  • Deferrals are typically granted and can be requested for one or two semesters in the future.

    • If you do not come to Cornell in the original or following semester, the deposit paid with your acceptance of admission is forfeited.

If you have accepted any financial aid from Cornell, the rules of the Council of Graduate Schools require that you cannot accept an offer of admission from another institution without obtaining a written release from Cornell.

Where do students typically live?

Housing & Residential Life provides up-to-date information about graduate student housing.

  • Many students choose to live off-campus in private apartments or rooms.

    • Consider a trip to Ithaca to arrange housing ahead of time, as most off-campus housing is rented in the Spring, though some may still be available in August

    • In considering housing alternatives, keep in mind that the Ithaca area has an excellent bus system, TCAT, and that the cost of housing tends to vary with access to bus routes.

A packet with information about housing opportunities is sent to applicants who accept admission offers.
