Undergraduate Webinars

Are you considering Cornell For Materials Science and Engineering?

Join us for interactive webinars on April 16 or April 18 to discuss the opportunities and programs at Cornell. This is an occasion to talk directly with MSE faculty. The faculty members look forward to offering a ten minute presentation followed by discussion on questions from you and your parents on MSE or on Cornell in general. Both webinars begin at 8:00 PM EDT and we will be available until 9:00 PM to address questions.

Below are the instructions on how to use Zoom to join the webinars. We recommend that you use a headset to avoid background noise when your microphone is unmuted.

You do not need to register for the webinars in advance.

Joining early: It is fine to join the meeting early by computer or by mobile device (cell phone or tablet). The meeting will be available to join 15 minutes before the start time--it is recommended that you join early in order to install any Zoom software and to test your microphone and speakers.

Joining late: It is fine to join the meeting late by computer or by mobile device.

Two ways to join by computer or by cell phone/tablet for April 16 webinar (the instructions for April 18 are identical except you should substitute the April 16 meeting ID (922 2774 5725) with the April 18 meeting ID (920 5382 4527))

1) Enter  link below for the April 16 webinar

You may be asked to approve installing some software components needed for Zoom. You can also join via your browser without installing the software components, but functionality may be limited (you may not be able to use computer audio and you may not see the video of the Cornell faculty).

Alternatively

2) Go to zoom.us  and look for the “Join A Meeting” button on the upper bar. You will be asked for the meeting number 922 2774 5725 (for April 18 use 920 5382 4527). You may be asked to approve installing some software components needed for Zoom. You can also join via your browser without installing the software components, but functionality may be limited (you may not be able to use computer audio and you may not see the video of the Cornell faculty).

Joining by phone only (no computer connection):

If you do not want to join by computer or mobile device but want to listen in and contribute by phone, follow the instructions below under "Audio Conference Information.”

Once Zoom has started:

Zoom may start you in full screen view, where you will see the first slide of the presentation for the webinar and a video window with the MSE faculty moderating the webinar.  On a laptop or desktop, you can exit full screen by hitting the ESC key, double-clicking or  pulling down the “View Options” at the top of the screen and choosing “Exit Full Screen”.  You can enter full screen by choosing that option from the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Audio: When you join the meeting by computer or mobile device (cell phone or tablet), Zoom will ask you if you want to use the computer for audio, if you want to call into a phone number for audio, or if you want Zoom to call your phone. If the “Join Audio Conference by Computer” button  is greyed out, then you may need to pick the “Test Computer Mic and Speakers” to make sure your computer has a microphone and speaker properly connected.  If you cannot get the microphone and speaker to work on your computer, then we recommend that you have Zoom call your phone by choosing the “Call Me” option.  Countries to which it is possible for Zoom to make a call are appended below under “Call Me Countries.”  You may also call in to the meeting by phone—you should see the meeting number and a Participant ID given when you choose this option and you will be asked to enter these.   A list of numbers to call into is appended below.

If during the meeting you want to change the audio connection to the meeting, at the lower left part of the window between the microphone and video icons, there is a pull-up menu—click on that to change the audio option.  Make sure you hang up the phone call before trying to connect to the audio by computer.

If you are running Zoom on your iOS or Android device, make sure you have given permission to the Zoom app on the phone to access the microphone.  Also make sure another app is not controlling the microphone or speaker.

The Host controls your microphone—you will be muted during the presentation and then microphones will be unmuted for questions following the presentation.  You can unmute your own microphone, but please do not do that during the presentation.  We recommend that you use a headset to avoid background noise when your microphone is unmuted.

Video and View Options:  We will not be activating your personal webcams, so you do not need test your personal webcam.  When you join the Zoom meeting, you will see the first slide of the webinar presentation and a video window of the MSE presenter. Your choices about how to control the presentation window and the video window depend on your device.  On a tablet, you may be able to control only the video window size by clicking on options at the corners of the video window.  On a desktop you can control the positions of the presentation window and video window by moving the mouse to the upper center of the screen—you should see a “View Options” pull down menu. “Side-by-side” displays the video window next to the presentation—you can adjust the relative sizes of the presentation window and the video window by dragging the “||” icon that separates the two windows.  When “Side-by-side” is not chosen and you are in full-screen mode, then the video window appears as a moveable thumbnail—you can make the presentation window a thumbnail by clicking on the icon in the upper right hand side of the thumbnail.  Icons on the upper left hand side of the thumbnail control the size of the thumbnail.

Chat window: At the bottom of the screen is a Chat icon.  You can click on this to chat with the Host. You cannot chat with anyone else participating in the webinar. If your chat window flashes orange, then the host is trying to chat with you. Should you have problems with audio, etc. please let us know via the Chat window.
