The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the national and international materials community in some aspect of the fields of metallurgy and materials.

Madsen, whose Cornell appointment is shared between the College of Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Office of the VP for Research and Innovation, earned the award for her “visionary and accomplished leadership in advancing fundamental research and promoting research integrity,” according to TMS. Madsen is recognized for encouraging everyone, including those underrepresented in materials science and engineering, to reach their full potential; guiding researchers through the research life cycle with integrity and credibility to achieve greater impact; and helping in the selection of promising research projects.

“TMS is a dynamic society, which moves quickly to address exciting and important topics such as equitable and inclusive engagement, and the evolving needs in basic and translational research,” Madsen said. “I am deeply honored to be selected for this award.”

The Leadership Award will be formally presented to Madsen at the TMS 2023 Annual Meeting, March 19-23, in San Diego.
