Graduate Programs

Consistently ranked among the top 10 materials science and engineering graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report (currently #8), the Cornell Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) graduate field offers students a world-class education in a world-class research environment. We invite you to explore our three graduate degrees: M.Eng., M.S., and Ph.D.

Our MSE graduate field includes more than 40 faculty members across three colleges and 10 departments, and our faculty routinely conduct interdisciplinary research with members of other departments. For our graduate students, this provides exposure to a broad spectrum of concepts and the experience of an unusually collaborative culture.

MSE graduate students master a set of core concepts and principles critical to a fundamental understanding of materials science and engineering, but also have tremendous flexibility in designing a sequence of coursework and research. With guidance and approval, programs are tailored to meet particular needs and interests across four strategic research areas: Energy Production and Storage, Electronics and Photonics, Bio-inspired Materials and Systems, and Green Technologies.
