Jaser Faruq  '12, Recently won “The Big Idea” competition for 2011 with his teammate Carolyn Witte, Arts '12 for their idea, The Malaria TechNet - a technology enhanced bed-net that prevents the transmission of malaria while providing clean energy, thereby improving health, fighting energy poverty, and increasing productivity all-in-one. Solar power amenities, chiefly the charging of cell phones, increase both the value and utility of bed-nets. By incorporating microfinance into our business model, they can make this high-tech product accessible to the rural poor. A synthesis of technologies, the Malaria TechNet is a catalyst for sustainable development.

Faruq was also a part of team Gradient Sportswear.  They received the Director’s Prize from the 2011 Jung-Hyun Oh – Schramm – SSCP Competition: Advanced Materials Enabled Innovation for their idea which presents a thermoelectric heating and cooling vest that allows users to ride their motorcycle in comfort at any time of the year. The vest uses adjustable thermoelectric elements to heat or cool the wearer to their preferred temperature.
