Prof. Darrell Schlom was awarded a 2016 Research Excellence Award by the Cornell College of Engineering. Prof. Schlom has demonstrated sustained excellence in research, most recently resulting in his extraordinary achievement establishing the NSF-funded PARADIM platform for research on advanced materials by design. Darrell’s individual research has long embodied a clear vision for atom-by-atom assembly of designed materials using molecular beam epitaxy techniques. The flagship PARADIM center implements Darrell’s vision on a vastly broader scale, making synthesis of these complex materials available to external users. Prof. Schlom has been very active in establishing research collaborations around the world. The materials synthesized in his group have led to many significant discoveries and many extremely highly cited publications. His MBE films are the gold standard for oxide interface materials.
